Food and drink

There are so many fantastic restaurants in Trieste, it is hard to know where to start with recommendations.  Puro and Osteria Salvagente are worth a visit. There is a wonderful pizzeria in Piazza della borsa, Trattoria Caprese. Please note that few places offer food all day, lunch is served from around 12.30h with last orders at 14h. Dinner is served from 19h. Good restaurants do get booked up and it is best to call in advance.

Nearer to home you will find Trattoria Contovello,  an excellent fish restaurant only a few steps away from the house. The Trattoria Sociale in Prosecco is run by the Serbian minority, it is known for meat on the grill. And there is also a pizzeria, Nove Sorelle, offering  typical Italian pizzas cooked in a wood burning oven.

A little further afield in Opicina (3km away) you will find Caffe Vatta, with a fantastic slection of pastries, sandwiches and drinks, and Trattoria Valeria, a family run restaurant offering typical food and wine from the Karst.

Of course you cannot come to Prosecco and not try the wine with the same name. You can get it on tap in the Trattoria Sociale.

Historical cafes

Trieste is known as ‘La citta di caffe’, (the city of coffee). There are over 500 companies in Trieste dedicated to importing, roasting and selling coffee. Illy is one of the world’s most important coffee companies. Every cup of Illy coffee served all over the world is made from coffee beans roasted in Trieste. There are many historical cafes in the city, some of which have changed little since the days when James Joyce and the cultural elite hung out together. Three not to be missed are Caffe San Marco in via Battisti, Cafe Specchi in the spectacular Piazza Unita, and the Illy cafe on the canal.

Osmizas

Osmizas are agri-tourism establishments dating back to the Austro-Hungarian days, particular to Trieste. Often in picturesque locations, run by families, they serve wine and food they produce themselves. One of the most famous, Osmiza Stoka, is right here in Contovello. There are around 50 Osmizas in the province of Trieste, with variable opening hours. You can find details of currently open Osmizas here. There is a short video with more information here.
